Independent Art Platform IŠKROVOS 2023: A Cultural, Artistic, and Alternative Hurricane in Panevėžys

Updated: May 31, 2023

While Panevėžys is often associated with industry, culture thrives amidst abandoned factories and forgotten tunnels. To witness this, we invite you to the music and art festival "IŠKROVOS 2023," taking place from July 22nd to 29th. For a week, Panevėžys proudly carries the title of the cultural capital, and visitors will discover that the festival unveils hidden treasures within factory tunnels, impressive art galleries, artist residencies, and three music stages.

Now in its eighth edition, the event not only offers an abundance of music, food, and all the essential elements of a great party but also includes excursions, film screenings, and workshops. Berlin? Detroit? Panevėžys!

From a Supply Company to an Independent Art Platform

After Lithuania regained independence, Panevėžys, once an industrial hub, faced challenges of demographic and industrial decline. Many large factories now stand abandoned. However, while Vilnius attracts the majority of inhabitants, Panevėžys is not lagging behind and continues to attract talented individuals who are reshaping the city. Creative centers such as "Pragiedruliai" and Stasys Eidrigevičius Art Center have recently opened their doors in Panevėžys, and the (post)industrial district of the city is revived by the alternative festival IŠKROVOS.

What began in 2014 as a cultural initiative among friends has evolved into an independent art platform that brings together creators and researchers from various fields worldwide. Its aim is to breathe new life into the abandoned administrative building of a supply company.

"IŠKROVOS is a place for rubbing and transforming the burden of memory. We create an unconventional space that operates on principles of self-governance and community, with the goal of putting forgotten Panevėžys streets back on the map," say the organizers.

The Opening Event on July 22nd will feature prominent Lithuanian musicians across three electronic and live music stages, including Jaroška, Tomas Vėjas, Acidless, Ement, Girių Dvasios, Shkema, DDL PLK, Timid Kooky, Kedro Stuburas, Skaptetas, Ira Hoisa (UA), Mario Exterminador (DE). Festival attendees will also have the opportunity to explore impressive art galleries and artist residencies, while creators are given the chance to showcase their works, integrate into the creative platform's life, reside, and create.

IŠKROVOS invites artists to participate in artistic residencies and engage in the festival program

For the first time this year, the festival extends an invitation to artists, curators, architects, designers, and professionals from various fields to join artistic residencies. The residents, alongside the organizers, will spend two weeks creating and living in the IŠKROVOS building, with their works exhibited to festival attendees.

Artists from different fields are encouraged to apply. This presents an excellent opportunity to take your art for a stroll, connect with like-minded individuals, explore, unload, and recharge with positive emotions.
